Macau, June 2nd, 2007
The Macau Child Development Association (MCDA) held its first fund-raising event
on June 2nd, 2007, which is also International Children’s day. The afternoon event
included a lunch and activities for children at the Westin Resort Macau, which was
also sponsor of the event. More than 100 children and parents participated.
Approximately MOP 13,000 was raised, which MCDA will use to offset some of the
costs associated with hiring therapists to help children suffering from developmental
and learning disorders.
Eliana Calderon, Coordinator for MCDA, remarked: “We received fantastic support
from the Westin Resort Macau staff and MCDA volunteers, who created a fun
atmosphere for the children. Although it is our first public fund-raising event, it is an
important part of our ongoing efforts to raise the money we need to help special
needs children in Macau. We think it was a great success and intend to organize
more fund-raising activities in the future.”
Mr. Ambrose So Shu Fai, President of MCDA declared: “MCDA is here for all
children in Macau. We are actively looking for more members and sponsors. Macau
has children suffering from ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, and other developmental
disorders, who desperately need therapy. MCDA invites everyone to join us to help
these children “Reach for the Stars”, so they can grow into happy and independent
adults.”
Sponsors of the event included: West Resort Macau, To Po Jewellery & Watch
company, Le Cesar Restaurant, Carrousel Shop, Magical Dream, and Eliana

About MCDA
Macau Child Development Association (MCDA) is a non-profit association dedicated
to helping all children in Macau, who may be suffering from a wide range of learning
disabilities or development disorders. The association was created by a group of
parents and concerned residents, who saw that current resources in Macau are not
able to meet the needs of the community.
Many young children in Macau have communication, speech, learning difficulties and
other developmental disorders, which will affect their education and prevent them
from growing into productive, independent members of the adult community. The
good news is that many of these children can be helped through treatment given by
speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and other child
development specialists.
Globally, the number of cases of children suffering from speech, language, learning,
and other developmental difficulties is increasing. Macau cannot escape this
unfortunate trend. MCDA is committed to identifying and treating a wide range of
these disorders, through the hiring of bilingual, university-educated specialists.
Founded in 2004, the mission of the MCDA is to help all children of Macau grow into
healthy, productive, and happy adults, this includes children with special needs
related to learning and speech development. MCDA aims to offer these children and
their families a range of treatments and educational programs that meet international
standards.
